Attendance
RHS ATTENDANCE RULES FOR EARNING CREDIT:
- All students are expected to be in attendance, and on time, for their scheduled classes to take part in learning experiences that help them gain proficiency towards the State of Michigan and RCS Graduation Requirements.
- Students with more than 10 absences in a semester are in danger of being defined as chronically absent by the State of Michigan.
- Students who accumulate 11 or more absences in a class during a semester and meet the rule of passing two of the three grading terms (Quarter, Quarter, and the Semester Exam) must also earn a score of 77% (C+) or higher on the semester exam. This score, as defined by state law, serves as evidence of proficiency in the course content due to the amount of instructional time missed.
- Students who reach an 11th absence in any course are still expected to attend and participate in class.
- Students who reach an 11th absence and earn less than 77% will receive an F for the semester grade.
RATIONALE:
- Non-truant attendance in school is a legal requirement outlined in the Michigan Compulsory School Attendance law. Good attendance is also an important life and work skill to foster within students.
- Students earn high school credit by demonstrating proficiency. This is shown through consistent attendance (no more than 10 absences per course each semester), active participation in class learning, and passing at least two of the three grading terms per semester.
- Per board policy, students who do not pass 2 of the 3 grading terms – Quarter, Quarter, and Final Exam - per semester will not receive credit for class and will be required to make up the course. Credit Recovery does have a cost to enroll in it.
ATTENDANCE RESPONSIBILITES:
- Parents/Guardians are responsible for making sure their student(s) attend school, monitoring attendance on the Parent Portal, communicating about absence, and maintaining up-to-date con-tact information so the school can provide information.
- Students are responsible for regular class attendance, being in class on time, following the RCS Code of Conduct, and participating in class learning activities.
- Roseville High School is responsible for maintaining accurate attendance records, notifying parents and students of attendance issues related to these rules, and complying with all legal requirements regarding student attendance.
ATTENDANCE CODE EXPLANATIONS:
- The following codes count toward absences requiring a final exam proficiency score: UNV, VER, PW, ETUX
- UNV: Unverified absence (no documentation).
- VER: Verified by parent/guardian (no documentation).
- PW: Parent/Personal withdraw (early sign-out without documentation).
- ETUX: Extended tardy (10+ minutes late); 5 ETUX in one class = 1 absence in one class.
- The following codes do NOT count towards this requirement: DOC, EXC, SB, AHS
- DOC: Documented absence (medical/funeral documentation).
- EXC: Excused (court, college visit, pre-approved absence up to 5 days).c.
- SB: School business.
- AHS: At-home suspension.
- Documentation must be submitted within 5 school days of returning for a change of attendance code
- Chronic medical conditions may be taken care of with a single doctor’s note on a case-by-case basis as an EXC absence if still called in. Doctor’s note/medical documentation must be current to the school year.
ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATION:
- Students and parents/guardians are expected to monitor student attendance through Pow-erSchool Student & Parent portals to make sure they do not have 11 or more absences in any course.
- The school will provide notification to parents and guardians of any class period missed on a given day through automated daily attendance call.
- Attendance summary letters will be emailed home each week listing a student's total number of countable absences (UNV, VER, PW) and Extended Tardies (ETUX) in each class.
- It is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to review provided information to make sure the allowable number of absences are not exceeded.
APPEAL PROCESS:
- Appeals are only required for students with 11 to 19 countable absences in any class over the course of a semester. The appeals process provides students with the opportunity to have an attendance and grades review to determine if they should be held to the final exam proficiency requirement (77% or higher).
- It is the responsibility of the impacted student to obtain, complete, and turn in the appeal form on time.
- Deadline for Appeals: All appeals paperwork must be submitted no later than end of the school day on the Friday before the last week of the semester. No appeals will be accepted after that date.
- Students not passing 2 of 3 grading terms (Quarter, Quarter, Final Exam) are not eligible to appeal.
- Students with 20+ absences may not appeal and must earn 77%+ on the final exam.
- Students with documented chronic medical conditions, who have had their medical paperwork approved by the school, do not need to go through the appeals process.
Appeals may be denied due to:
- Falsified documentation/verification
- Failure to maintain updated contact information
- Late documentation (after 5 days)
- Skipping or excessive ETUX
- History of absenteeism
- The notification of appeal decision will be issued to the parent/guardian email address on file with the school of the student’s primary contact.
- There is no appeal of a loss of credit due to not achieving a 77% or higher on a final exam
- The determination is a building-level decision and is final.
ADDITIONAL ATTENDANCE INFORMATION AND STIPULATIONS:
- Classroom referrals for skipping are not eligible for make-up work.
- Students who continue to demonstrate patterns of poor attendance, including tardiness, are subject to school discipline, truancy filings, and/or being dropped from enrollment.
- Student early sign-outs: All students must sign out through the SafeScan system when leaving the building for any reason. All attendance rules above apply to early sign-out absences.
- Students 18 years and older: Must have prior parent/guardian and approval from a principal approval to sign out early:
- Students who reach 18 years of age while enrolled at RHS continue to be obligated to the school handbook and Code of Conduct in their entirety, including attendance expectations. Students’ continued enrollment after reaching 18 years of age evidences their agreement with this requirement. Per the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, after turning 18, if a student is still being claimed as a dependent for tax purposes, the school will continue to share all health/medical records, major disciplinary concerns, grades, progress re-ports, and other information with the student’s parents/guardians throughout the student’s enrollment at the school. Upon the student reaching the age of 18, it is the responsibility of the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) to provide evidence that they are no longer consid-ered a dependent on income taxes through the required school process. Should a student have a concern about particular information being shared with their parent/guardian, the student should consult with their principal
